Home Remedies for a Sinus Headache

There are many different types of headaches, and one that accompanies a sinus infection or sinusitis is referred to as a sinus headache. This article will teach you how to deal with this type of headache naturally and effectively.

Certainly, you would want to attain much-needed relief from a sinus headache because it can be very maddening — it’s something that causes painful pressure on various parts of your head such as your nose, eyes and of course forehead. A sinus headache can also sometimes cause your teeth to ache. You can expect for the throbbing pain to be worse at the start of the day and each time you bend over.

Dealing with sinusitis can help make a sinus headache go away on its own, but by experience we all know that a sinus infection can last for several days. So if you can no longer bear the kind of pain a sinus headache brings, try one or more of the following tried-and-tested effective home remedies for such nuisance:

Steam Inhalation

Getting thick mucus in your nasal and sinus passages to loosen can considerably reduce the intensity of a sinus headache, and one of the best ways to do so is by increasing humidity. You can fill a small basin with hot water, place your head a few inches above it, drape a towel over your head, and start inhaling the steam. You may also take hot showers. Drinking herbal teas several times throughout the day can work wonders, too.

Irrigation

Some people might find the use of a bulb syringe or neti pot to irrigate the passages kind of icky, but this is an effective home remedy for a sinus headache as it can help to relieve sinus pain as well as pressure. Just make sure that you use a fresh batch of saline solution (a glass of distilled water with a pinch of baking soda and half a teaspoon of sea salt dissolved in it) and thoroughly clean your equipment each time you irrigate your nasal and sinus passages.

Alternating Hot and Cold

Fill one small basin with hot water and another one with cold water. Dunk a washcloth into each one of them. Place the hot washcloth over your forehead and leave it there for 40 to 60 seconds. Afterwards, replace with a cold washcloth and allow it to stay in place for the same duration of time. Do a total of three alternating hot and cold compresses. Have this performed up to four times a day in order to attain relief from a sinus headache.

Having More Spice

It’s also a wonderful idea for you to include hot peppers into your diet while having a bout of sinusitis if you want to keep a sinus headache to a minimum. Capsaicin present in hot peppers has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can help in managing a sinus infection. Also, the fact that hot peppers can make your nose run can help in relieving the painful pressure that you are experiencing on various parts of your face.

Ginger Tea

Worry not if you are not into consuming hot peppers because you may deal with that nagging sinus headache with a cup of ginger tea — it has superb anti-inflammatory properties, too, just like hot peppers. To make a cup of it, simply allow a teaspoon of grated ginger root to steep in a cup of hot water. Strain and add a teaspoon of honey (optional). You may also include ginger into your diet in order to bounce back from sinusitis much faster.
