Using Essential Oils with Children

Parents often rely on medicine to treat their baby’s illnesses, but with the constant use of these medications, children can become used to the dosage that you are giving them hence they will need higher dosages at such a young age. This can be dangerous in the long run, since the use of antibiotics can affect their immune system as well as other bodily functions. Parents nowadays are seeking alternative solutions to treating their baby in a safer and effective manner. This is where the use of essential oils come in.

Essential oils come in handy when it comes to enhancing your child’s immune system and even protecting them against possible health issues. But as with any treatment, it is best that you find out how to use essential oils on your children in a safe manner. Here are a few tips that you should know of.

Do your research

Although there are literally dozens of essential oils being sold today, not all of them can be applied to your child. The same thing goes true in the case of pregnant and nursing women since their immune systems may be compromised. You will need to do your research at this point to ensure that what you are getting is safe for you.

Use oils correctly

There are two methods on how you can use essential oils and these are through inhalation, and the other one is through topical application. Ingesting is not recommended especially when you are using them on children. For example, you can diffuse some peppermint blend in your kid’s bedroom if they have colds, or you can apply a combination of peppermint oil and carrier oil to rub on their chest to silence their cough.

Learn to dilute them

There is a common misconception that you can apply essential oils directly on the skin. Although there are oils that are safe to apply on the skin without the need of a carrier oil like jojoba, almond, and olive oil, most of the essential oils need to be diluted properly first. Diluting your essential oils is necessary especially when it comes to your children so that they will get enough oil on them. Less is always more when it using essential oils. Keep in mind that a small amount of essential oils can go a long way already which is why a 1 to 2% dilution is ideal for children below 12 years old.
