Vitamin D Deficiency and How to Treat It

We may not notice it, but we might be deficient in certain vitamins. One particular vitamin that we may not get enough of is Vitamin D. Studies show that a large percentage of Americans are actually deficient in vitamin D3. This vitamin is usually received from exposure to the sun. You may think that you are getting enough of it already but when tested, you might be surprised that you are not getting enough of it because we spend most of our time inside the house or at the office. The problem with this is that the lack of vitamin D3 can lead to rickets in kids or osteomalacia for the adults.

When we don’t supply our body with sufficient amounts of vitamin D3, we increase our risk from the following health issues:

Colds and flu

Without vitamin D3, our immune system won’t be able to keep up with the demands of the body, hence we end up getting sick easily. With that being said, getting this vitamin, through sunshine or through other means can help address this issue easily.

Weak muscles

Another symptom that is associated with lack of vitamin D3 is that our muscles are becoming weak. This is because it is missing out on vitamin D which is needed to support muscle function.

Mental disorders

You might be surprised that our mental health can be put at risk too when you don’t get sufficient amounts of vitamin D in your system. Among the possible mental problems that you might experience include lack of focus, foggy brain, and other severe cases.

Experts recommend that you stay outdoors 10 to 15 minutes every day with about 40% of your skin soaking up the sun so that you will be able to get the require damount of UVB for the day. It is a good idea to get some sun in the morning when the sun isn’t too hot for your skin.

Fish

Fish is also a good source of vitamin D which you can incoporate into your diet as much as possible. Although the amount of vitamin D present is not that high, it can supply you with sufficient amount of vitamin D that will protect you against deficiency.

Eggs

Having omelet, scrambled, or sunny side up in the morning can also deliver some vitamin D into your system. Again the amount of vitamin D is not as high as what you can get from the sun but it is still worth adding to your diet as much as possible.
