5 Unusual Uses of Coffee

Coffee has always been a staple in many breakfast tables because of its ability to jolt one wide awake. Even those late afternoons when your energy level is dipping, it’s always coffee that you reach out to. But did you know that aside from giving you an energy boost, coffee can be used in other ways? As a matter of fact, you’ll be surprised on how versatile coffee can be.

Here are some of its surprising uses.

Fix furniture. Yes, you read that right. If your dark wooden furniture is showing some cracks already, you can mix 2 to 3 tablespoons of instant coffee with water until you create a paste. If the furniture that you are fixing has some red undertones, add a few drops of iodine to the paste. Apply the paste into the cracks and remove excess paste with a cloth. Buff afterwards.

Scouring and cleaning. If you are using ground coffee for your morning fix, don’t throw the grounds just yet. You can actually use it to remove grime, grease, and dirt on various objects because of its abrasive properties. The best part is that ground coffee is light so you won’t have to worry about scratches and such plus it is good for your hands when used compared to the harsh cleaning agents that you normally use.

Fertilizer. Another surprising use of coffee is that it can act as a fertilizer for your plants. Technically, it is not the coffee grounds that plants like but their aeration and acidity. There is also the nitrogen, trace minerals, and even phosphorus that can help your plants grow beautifully. Just dig ¾ coffee grounds into the soil near the plant’s roots and repeat this every month. Adding too much can have an adverse effect on your plants even they can accommodate high acidity levels.

Insect repellent. If you are bothered by pesky pests and insects, coffee might be the solution that you are looking for. You can place some on areas that ants go to and you will see that they won’t come back any time soon. This is a better alternative compared to using pesticides that can transfer to the food that you are preparing especially if you are going to spray in the kitchen. Take note, however, that this is not applicable for body use.

Get rid of pet smell. As a pet lover, chances are your pet is always inside your home with your kids. Although you are giving them comfort and love, they can leave that pet smell that will wrinkle your nose. Fortunately, coffee can help remove that particular smell easily. Just heat a cup of ground coffee to let the scent emanate. Place the warm coffee beans in the area where your dog frequents and by the time the beans cool down, the smell will be gone as well.

These are just a few examples of how you can use coffee aside from making your regular drink. So the next time you’re using coffee, think of all the possibilities that you can do with it.
