Vitiligo: Facts and Home Remedies

Vitiligo is a skin condition marked by less pigmented skin patches. They are usually white in color and are sharp-margined, along with white hair growth on the affected skin. The mouth and the nose may also be affected, not to mention that both sides of the body are usually involved.

Causes and Epidemiology

The destruction of melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives the skin its color, is principal cause or vitiligo. According to Web MD, the exact cause behind the cellular destruction is idiopathic or unknown, but one possible reason is that the body’s own immune system is the one responsible for destroying the melanocytes.

As per the publication, vitiligo involves up to two percent of the population and it two to five million Americans are assumed to have the skin condition. Vitiligo also usually develops early in life, between ten and 30 years old. It is added that 95 percent of the affected people will develop the condition before they reach 40. Also, the condition develops irregardless of gender, but it may be genetic in nature.

Signs and Symptoms

Vitiligo presents the following signs and symptoms. According to Mayo Clinic, the symptoms include light or white patches on the skin, premature graying or whitening of the hair, loss of color in the oral and nasal tissues, change in hue of the inner layer of the eyeball or retina, and discolored patches around skinfolds. As per the publication, the person should seek medical consult if the areas of the skin, eyes, and hair lose their color.

Home Remedies

While medical treatment is available to halt or delay the discoloring process, home remedies can also be done to manage vitiligo.

Papaya

Papaya is one of the notable remedies for vitiligo. Among the fruits, papaya is one of the best known when it comes to promoting the health of the skin. According to Vkool, the person cuts the fruit into different pieces. Then, those are rubbed on the white skin patches. After that, it is allowed to dry naturally and other papaya pieces are applied. Along with the fruit, its juice can also be consumed everyday to relieve the melanin cells. The procedure is done everyday to optimize its effects.

Turmeric and Mustard Oil

Turmeric and mustard oil are two other agents for vitiligo management. According to Home Cure, the combination of the two stands as a beneficial natural cure for the skin condition. As per the publication, around 500 grams of turmeric is hammered and soaked in eight liters of water at night. Next, the mixture should be biled in the morning, until it becomes one-eight of the original volume. Then, the resulting liquid should be strained and combined with 500 grams of mustard oil, before it is heated until only the oil is left. The oil is applied on the white patches every day and night.

Basil Leaves

Aside from being a meal ingredient, basil leaves also act as remedy for vitiligo. According to My Health Tips, basil leaves are found to be efficient when it comes to treating the skin problem. The person just has to extract the juice of five to six lemons and add one to two teaspoons of the basil leaves. The resulting mixture is then applied on the affected skin areas and is left for 15 minutes. After that, the skin is washed with warm water and is patted dry. The procedure is done daily for five to six months to repigment the skin.

Vitiligo does not have the same severity and seriousness with other medical conditions like bronchitis and heart disease. However, it is still an abnormal condition, which needs to be addressed, assessed, and treated.
