Tips on How to Build a Garden

Ever wonder how to start a garden? Gardening adds beauty to your outdoor space and can attract butterflies and bees that can pollinate the plants so they will grow healthier. You can use your outdoors too as part of your meditation therapy especially when you are feeling stressed out. But for some of us, starting a garden is a bit tough because they just don’t know where to begin. Well, the good news is that it is never too late to start learning how to build your garden from scratch because there are a few things that you need to consider. Here are some tips to get you started.

Look for an idea

Before you start your garden, you need to ask yourself what kind of garden would you like to start? Is it a vegetable garden, a flower garden, herb garden, or a combination of all three? You also need to consider what types of plants you would like to see in your garden. All of this information can be overwhelming at first but the trick here is to start small. This way, you will be able to test the waters until you find what it is actually good for you.

Location is everything

Another thing that you should consider when it comes to building your garden is location. There are certain types of plants that will need full sunshine while others will do well in the shade. You will need to choose your plants properly for this and depending on your location so you will not get frustrated when they don’t thrive very well. Keep in mind that gardening will require a bit of research on your end so you will get your garden right.

Start your gardening portfolio

If you really want to get into this whole gardening stuff, why not build your own gardening portfolio where you can put all the plants you have in your space and jot down notes about them. Take photos if you can and put them in your portfolio as well as your observations based on your care for them so you will have an idea on what works and what doesn’t.

Lighten your pots

For those who don’t want to have to deal with moving heavy pots, there is a secret that you can try. Fill about ¼ of the bottom of the pot with packing peanuts then cover it with a canvas before layering your potting soil and then your plant. This reduces the amount of soil that you are using so that it will be easier to move your pots in and out of your garden.

Boost your soil

Another tip to have a fully functioning garden is to enhance the quality of the soil. This will require adding compost to the soil to deliver more nutrients to it or add pre-made vitamin mixes to it. Composting can be done by layering newspaper, food debris, and soil and leaving it to decompose so that the nutrients will seep into the soil below. You can also have an expert look at the soil that you have on hand so you will know how to make it richer for your plants.

Loosen the soil

You should also loosen the soil in some plants to help the roots go deeper but you need to be careful on how you do this. It’s important that you loosen the soil when it is moist and not when it is still wet or too dry so that you won’t damage the root system. Use a spade or fork to carefully the soil so that oxygen will be able to penetrate deep into the earth and for the root to grow some more.
