Tips on How to Asthma and Allergy Proof Your Home

Allergies can make our lives miserable. When you’ve been exposed to pollen, dust, pet dander, and whatnot, you will most likely have to deal with runny nose, and watery eyes, and even headaches too for that matter. That being said, how will you be able to prevent your asthma or allergy from getting triggered?

The best way to protect yourself against the sudden flare ups of asthma and allergy attacks is to allergy proof your home. Here are a few tips for you to try out:

Remove carpeting

If you have carpets at home, you might want to remove it and replace them with area rugs instead. One reason behind this is that carpets tend to gather dust, pollen, dirt, and other allergens that can be released in the air as you move around. Switching to washable rugs can reduce your asthma attacks considerably because they are easier to maintain.

Remove clutter

Since dust is a culprit to asthma attacks, you will need to make it a point to lessen the amount of dust in your home. One way to do this is to remove the clutter in your space as these simply turn to be home to dust and other allergens. Store personal belongings in plastic bins for easy storage and clean up.

Close your windows

When pollen season is high, it is best that you close all your windows and turn on the air conditioning instead. This will keep pollen from entering your home thus preventing your allergies from starting up. For those who are living in a cold climate, install double paned windows instead.

Shower when you get home

If you’ve been out and about the entire day, you will need to take a shower before anything else. This helps remove any pollen, dust, dirt, and other allergens from being spread in your home which can trigger your allergies. Make sure that you scrub your skin and hair to ensure that you have removed all traces of possible allergen on your body.

Cover your pillows and mattress with dust-mite proof covers

It is always a good idea to cover your mattress and pillows with dust-mite covers to prevent any dust mites from settling in your bed. This way, you will not be inhaling any dust mite that can irritate your nasal passages.
