Tips on Balancing Your Blood Sugar

Balancing your blood sugar levels may be the last thing on your mind as you try to make sense of your work load at the office. Unfortunately, the unstable blood sugar levels that we subject our bodies to often leaves us feeling tired by the afternoon, craving for something sweet or salty, or become generally moody which can affect our relationships with our family and co-workers too. Fortunately, there are ways in which you can regulate your blood sugar levels so that you will be able to sustain your energy throughout the day. How will you be able to do this? Here are a few tips to consider.

Snack between meals

If you want to keep your energy levels stable, you might want to consider incorporating snacks between meals. This is useful as you are preventing your blood sugar from actually dipping especially after lunch. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should go for the salty or sweet ones because they can cause your blood sugar to spike.

Avoid skipping meals

Some people think that skipping meals is a good idea especially when they are trying to lose weight but you’re simply causing your blood sugar to fluctuate. This isn’t what you need if you want to be able to focus on your work. A better option would be to follow a regular diet with lots of vegetables in it to help stabilize your energy levels.

Have protein

Eating carbohydrates cannot be helped which is why you need to balance it with some proteins. Foods that are rich in proteins can help slow down the release of energy so you will have a steady supply of it throughout the day.

Add more vegetables

Another thing that you should consider when trying to regulate your blood sugar is to start changing your diet into a healthier one. And what better way to achieve this than to add 5 to 10 servings of veggies to your meals. Choose those that have proteins in them to help keep your belly full for hours.

Skip refined carbs and sugar

Like it was mentioned before, eating sweets is not really recommended for your blood sugar because it can cause it to spike in the first place. Although you will get an energy boost at this point, the effects can quickly wane which can make you feel more tired than before. This is something that you should consider when choosing a snack to munch on in between meals.

Breakfast is good

Don’t skip breakfast in the morning because it will be hours before you can have a decent meal and there is a tendency to go overboard at lunch time. It is better if you prepare a protein rich breakfast so that your stomach will feel full for hours while your blood sugar remains stable until your next meal. Think scrambled eggs, oatmeal, and the like in the morning because you’ll get the energy boost to help you get through the day.

Minimize starch intake

Starchy foods are tasty for sure but they wreak havoc in your blood sugar. Your blood sugar levels may be up but after a while it will fall back down leaving you wondering what happened. It is much better to stick with protein or little carbs as much as possible.

Managing your blood sugar levels doesn’t have to be that difficult because these steps are easy to follow in the first place. You might be surprised to find how energetic you’ll feel when you manage to keep your blood sugar steady.
