Tips for Seniors on How to Stay Safe in Summer

The summer season is the perfect time for the whole family to get together, but for seniors, this also puts them in danger of dizziness, heat stroke, and high blood even. Unfortunately, many have forgotten the danger with high temperatures which is why it is important that you take steps to ensure that the heat will not get to you.

For those who are taking care of seniors, or are already at their senior age, the summer tips on how to protect you from the heat should be tried out.

Keep it cool

Exposing yourself to high temperatures can be dangerous as this can cause your blood pressure to elevate. If you are living in a house that has no air conditioning unit, you might want to look for a way to keep yourself cool. It is important that you invest in fans or set up an air conditioning unit in your room. This will help you stay cool during the summer.

Hydrate

Make it a point to hydrate especially during peak hours in the summer as your body will constantly eliminate fluids in your body. If you do not replenish the lost fluids, you are putting yourself at risk of dehydration. This can lead to other health issues such as dizziness, loss of consciousness, and heart failure even.

Apply sunscreen

Sunscreen is becoming more and more important as the hot summer sun becomes worse every year. Leaving your skin exposed to the sun, even for just a few hours, may cause sunburn, and cause your skin to become dry and irritated. Look for sunscreen that comes with high SPF and apply it at least half an hour before you step outside your home.

Wear cool clothing

Avoid wearing too many layers of clothing during summer to help cool your body down. As much as possible, choose cotton clothing because it allows air to circulate. Even at night, go for something light to help you sleep better.

Choose cooler food

Staying in the kitchen to cook during the summer is not really inviting for seniors, so the best option here is to try something light like cold salads. Go for fruits and vegetables too as they are easier to digest.

These are just a few examples of what you can do to help you protect yourself against the summer season.
