Signs You Need to Visit a Neurologist

Are you nervous that there is something wrong with your nervous system? The specialist for you to visit is a neurologist — he or she is a medical doctor who is specializing in the identification and treatment of various disorders concerning the brain, spinal cord and nerves.

Here are some of the telltale signs that it’s a good idea for you to pay a neurologist a visit as soon as you can:

Recurrent Headaches

Having a nasty headache from time to time is perfectly normal. It can be related to anything from stress, dehydration to hormonal changes. It is an entirely different story, however, if you suffer from a headache very often, especially if it’s accompanied by other symptoms such as light sensitivity, nausea and vomiting.

If the mentioned symptoms are present, you could actually be suffering from migraines. Generally, migraines are much more painful than headaches and they can also last so much longer — sometimes for days!

Feeling Dizzy

Just like headaches, dizziness once in a while can be regarded as something normal. But if you encounter it a lot, then there could be a problem that a neurologist can help identify and treat.

According to neurologists, dizziness can be categorized into three different types. First, there’s vertigo that makes you feel like you are moving or spinning even though you are perfectly still. Second, there’s dissociation that gives you a spaced out feeling, like you are detached from your body or the environment. Third, there’s presyncope that makes you feel as though you are about to faint.

Numbness or Pain

Recurrent numbness or pain is a clear sign that there is something wrong with the nerves, usually indicating damage to them. Commonly, people with nerve damage experience numbness or pain in the extremities, like the hands and feet. There are instances, too, in which the sensation felt is tingling or burning.

Experts say that nerve damage can sometimes be due to an underlying medical condition, and one example is diabetes. Having the cause dealt with can help in saving the nerves from becoming damaged further.

Tremors

Are your hands shaking even though you are perfectly calm and not anxious? What you are experiencing are tremors, and it is recommended that you see a neurologist soon. Tremors can be experienced in various parts of the body, such legs, torso, head, arms and of course the hands. The vocal cords can be affected, too.

If you have a shuffling gait, make sure that you pay a neurologist a visit as soon as you can. Usually, shuffling is an indicator of a neurological disorder, such as Parkinson’s disease.

Loss of Grip

There are times in which loss of grip is due to pain felt in the hands. Usually, it is related to what’s called carpal tunnel syndrome, which is linked to a host of problems that range from diabetes, hypertension to a trauma to the wrist.

In some instances, loss of grip is brought about by excessive weakness of the muscles in the hands. But whether due to pain or weakness, it’s a good idea to have the problem seen by a neurologist so that the underlying cause may be identified and treated right away.
