Remedies to Treat Shortness of Breath

Dyspnea, or more commonly known as shortness of breath, is a condition where we have difficulty getting air in into our lungs. There are several causes for shortness of breath such as pregnancy, lung and heart problems, which will require medical attention, but if your shortness of breath is not an emergency, there are home remedies that you can try to make you breathe better.

Ginger

Nasal congestion can make it difficult for you to breathe well which is why you will need some ginger to help you out. This spice is a natural expectorant and can help reduce the amount of mucus being produced in your nasal passages. Another reason why you should use ginger is that it can fend off any respiratory or throat infection.

Sit forward on your chair

If you feel short of breath all of a sudden, sit down and rest. Put your feet flat on the floor while slightly leaning your chest forward. Place your elbows on your knees or you can hold your chin in both hands. Your neck as well as shoulders should be relaxed at this point to help open up your airways.

Fennel

Ayurveda treatment recommends fennel when it comes to treating shortness of breath. Just like ginger, it works as an expectorant where it breaks up the phlegm that has accumulated in your throat. This is useful to those who are suffering from respiratory problems such as coughs, congestion, and bronchitis even. Just add a teaspoon of fennel seeds in a cup filled with hot water and let them steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Strain afterwards then add some honey to sweeten your drink. You should drink this tea 2 to 3 times in a day to help you breathe better.

Relaxed position in bed

Shortness of breath may occur when you are in bed which is why you should go into a relaxed position to help you breathe better. You can place some pillows under your head and under your knees too while lying on your back or you can lie on either side with a pillow placed between your knees. Both positions can help open up your airways even as you sleep.

Having shortness of breath can happen from time to time, which is why you should try these home remedies out. If you feel that your breathing difficulty is associated with a medical condition, make sure that you consult your doctor.
