Acid reflux is a type of gastrointestinal disorder that is triggered when the acid in the stomach goes back up the esophagus. This may happen from time to time but it can come with painful symptoms such as heartburn which may not go away that quickly. Your acid reflux can actually be triggered by weakened LES or lower esophageal sphincter or when it gets damaged. The LES usually closes up to keep the food that has already traveled in the stomach to be regurgitated. So how will you be able to keep your acid reflux from acting up? Well, there are some foods that can actually keep it at bay such as the ones found below.

Yogurt and kefir

Fermented foods such as yogurt and kefir are actually good for those who have GERD as it help stabilize the acids in the stomach by keeping the gut environment well balanced. Fermented foods are also gentle on the stomach and will not cause any build-up of gas.

Vegetables

Another way to keep your acid reflux at bay is to eat a good serving of vegetables. This is because vegetables are usually low in fat as well as sugar and can prevent your stomach acid from acting up. Think green beans, asparagus, leafy greens, cucumber, potatoes, broccoli, and cauliflower just to name a few.

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar helps calm the acids in your stomach which is what you need to prevent acid reflux from being triggered. You can add a tablespoon of it in a glass of warm water and drink it every morning to help neutralize the acids in your stomach and to keep gas from building up as well. You can even mix it with your meals too if you like to get a decent serving of this organic ingredient.

Ginger

When it comes to controlling your acid reflux, it is always a good idea to add ginger to your list of ingredients to add to your diet.  One reason behind this is that ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and can protect you against heartburn too. Make some ginger tea, or add shreds of ginger to your smoothies, or incorporate it into your meals to get its anti-inflammatory benefits.

Wild caught salmon and tuna

Adding wild caught fish to your diet when you have acid reflux is highly recommended as fish is one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Not only are essential fatty acids good for your acid reflux, it is also good for your heart too. Eat at least 3 servings of fish per week to get its nutritional benefits.

Lean meats

Lean meats like turkey, seafood, chicken, and fish can be incorporated into your diet because they are all low in fat which you need to keep acid reflux at bay. There are many ways for you to prepare these ingredients such as baked, poached, or grilled. Combine them with salads too and you will see that your acid reflux won’t be acting up too much at all.

Non-citrus fruits

Another type of food that you can eat when you have acid reflux are non-citrus fruits. Keep in mind that your acid reflux is triggered by sour or acidic fruits which is why you should stay away from them as much as possible. Think apples, pears, melons, and the like as they are easy on the stomach. 

As you can see, living with acid reflux is possible as long as you know what to eat. Making a few changes to your diet by incorporating these ingredients can yield better results too. You will be surprised to find that there is less reaction in your stomach this way.
