How to Do Positive Self-Talk

There is a saying that we are our own worst enemy. After all, we know ourselves very well that there is this nagging voice in our head that tells us that we are not that good in what we do, that we are worthless, and a failure. We all have this voice in our head all the time. Some can easily mute this distracting voice while others tend to listen to them often. Unfortunately, this leads to anxiety and depression even. But did you know that you can actually take steps to change this nagging voice inside your head? Here are a few tips on how positive self-talk can help you out.

Start being aware of your thoughts

The power of awareness is a huge thing when it comes to our thoughts. This may be hard at first, but once you become attuned to what is going on in your mind, you will find that it is easier to be inside your head and start processing your thoughts. It would help if you have a journal on hand where you can jot down your thoughts for review.

Learn distancing

When we start feeling anxious, we often ask ourselves, “Why am I anxious?”. Unfortunately, this line of questioning can actually heighten our sense of worry. A better way to address your feelings is to use the second or even the third person when querying yourself. This way, you are distancing yourself from the problem so you will be able to have a good hold on your emotions.

Choose your thoughts

This is easier said than done but choosing your thoughts or how you react to the thoughts and feelings that are running through your mind and body can give you a better control over the outcome. If you are aware of what is going inside your head, you will be able to come up with a better choice on how to respond.

Be gentle

There are times when you will face setbacks in your journey to positive self-talk but instead of losing your stride, take the time to acknowledge your mistakes and start again. Remember that this is not a contest but it is a journey that will take some time to master. By being gentle, you will be able to forgive yourself then start anew.

Check surroundings

One of the difficulties of starting to talk to yourself positively is your surroundings. If you are constantly surrounded by people who are putting you down or are often negative, it’s going to be tough to accomplish your task. If you can’t distance yourself from them, at least cut back on the amount of negativity that you are exposing yourself to. For example, you can stop listening to negative news on TV, or start clearing up your surroundings so you will feel better with what you see.

Face those fears

We all have something that we fear. A fear of talking in public places, fear of going somewhere on your own, and so on. Well, you will need to learn to face those fears sooner or later so that they will not have any hold on you. You may find that these fears of yours are not that bad once you get to face them.

Negative thoughts can come and go but talking to yourself in a positive way can have a huge effect to your overall health. With the tips mentioned above, you will be able to curb your negative thoughts and that voice in your head that is pulling you down. Keep in mind that you are in control of your actions and how your mind works so train yourself to think positively and everything will come together for you.
