How Often Should You Wash Your Pillowcases, Blankets and Bed Sheets?

It is said that you spend about one-third of your entire life in bed. And it’s exactly for this reason why it is very important that you are sleeping on something that is not only comfortable and sleep-friendly, but also clean.

This article will teach you how often you should have your pillowcases, blankets and bed sheets cleaned, so read on!

Because you spend the entire trip to dreamland lying in bed, your pillowcases, blankets and bed sheets tend to collect a lot of sweat, skin oils, dead skin cells, dirt and grime. And that is why you need to have them cleaned regularly. Otherwise, you are risking having pimples, acne, rashes and fungal infections!

Unfortunately, a lot of people do not have an idea on how often they should have their pillowcases, blankets and bed sheets washed. But just because they look clean doesn’t mean they are clean — most of the time they are already teeming with grime and microbes without looking the part!

Don’t rely on your eyes and nose when deciding whether or not it’s time for pillowcases, blankets and bed sheets to be thrown into the washing machine. The following are some tips on how often you should be washing them:

Pillowcases

Your pillowcases can easily get soiled because it is constantly in contact with your face and tresses, both of which can produce lots of oils and also harbor dirt and bacteria.

Especially if you are prone to pimples and acne, it’s definitely a good idea for you to wash your pillowcases weekly.

It’s not just your pillowcases that you should keep clean, but the pillows themselves, too! Experts recommend that you clean your pillows about every 3 months or so — that’s 3 to 4 times a year only.

Cleaning feather, down and fiber pillows should be trouble-free as all you have to do is throw them in the washing machine. But still it’s important for you to check the care instructions provided by the manufacturer. Unfortunately, it can be really challenging to wash foam pillows.

Blankets

Unlike pillows, there is really no need to wash blankets on a weekly basis, although it will depend on how often you are actually using your blankets.

If blankets are commonly rolled and unused because they are placed at the end of your bed primarily for decorative purposes only, then there is really need to wash them as regularly as your pillowcases. Washing them every 1 to 2 months should be fine, of course following specific care instructions for them.

But if you are using your blankets each time you hop into bed, then it’s recommended for you to have them washed every week or every other week to keep them as clean as possible.

Bed Sheets

Except for your head, your entire body is always in contact with your bed sheets as you are catching some much-needed Z’s every night or during nap times.

It’s exactly for this reason why it can be very easy for bed sheets to get dirty. Experts suggest that you wash your bed sheets on a weekly basis, most especially if you tend to sweat a lot at night — bed sheets that are soaked with sweat are a playground for microbes that can cause a host of skin problems!

Again, make sure that you follow the manufacturer’s directions on caring for bed sheets.

Before you go, make sure that you also keep these things in mind:

Use a mild detergent. When shopping, go for a detergent that does not contain harsh ingredients. Although it can leave your pillowcases, blankets and bed sheets clean, they can actually cause skin irritation.

Also opt for a mild fabric conditioner to keep skin irritation at bay.
