Home Remedies to Treat Infant Jaundice

Infant jaundice during the first few days of a newborn’s life. It appears when there is an excess of bilirubin that came from the blood cells that have been broken down. It is usually filtered in the baby’s liver but there are times when their liver is not mature enough to process the incoming onslaught of bilirubin hence babies can appear yellowish in color. It’s enough to determine whether your baby has jaundice at home. If your baby has light skin, press down lightly on your little one’s chest. If there is a yellowing of the skin after removing your finger, it is possible that your infant has jaundice. It is important that you consult with your doctor or pediatrician to determine if your baby has jaundice.

How to Treat Infant Jaundice Naturally

Most of the time, doctors prescribe certain medications to alleviate the yellowing of the skin. But there are other ways to help with this condition. The best part is that they are all natural too. Here are a few that you should try.

Exposure to sunlight

If your baby has slight jaundice, your baby may not need any prescription medications. An alternative to jaundice medication is to expose your little one to sunlight for about 10 to 15 minutes per day. What this does is to give your baby a good amount of vitamin D and even help break down bilirubin better to be excreted from the body.

Regular feeding

Another way to help flush out the excess bilirubin in your baby’s body is to increase their feeding time. Not only is drinking milk a good way to gain nutrients, but your baby stays hydrated too and even be able to flush out the excess bilirubin the natural way. When you increase the number of feeds, you are actually boosting your milk production too.

Supplementing with formula milk

There are some breastfed babies who need supplemental formula milk to ensure that they are getting a decent amount of nutrients that can strengthen the liver so the bilirubin will be processed.

Stop breastfeeding for a while

If doctors have determined that your baby has acquired jaundice because of your breast milk, your doctor might not recommend it as of yet. Fortunately, you can keep your milk running by pumping the excess milk. You can prepare these bottles so that you will be able to feed your baby.

Take herbal supplements

There are certain types of teas that you can use on your little one. The ingredients that are typically found in herbal supplements include dandelion tea, comfrey leaf, dandelion tea, and agrimony which are known to detoxify your body.
