Foods to Avoid If You’re Pregnant

Because you are eating for two while in the family way, it’s important for you to carefully watch what you put in your mouth. Anything that you eat is also eaten by the growing baby inside your womb. However, it’s important to note that not everything that’s safe for you can be regarded as also safe for your baby. In fact, some of the foods you are fond of eating may contain bacteria, parasites, elements and even nutrients that can harm your little bundle of joy.

Because tuna is high in mercury, during pregnancy it’s a good idea for you to limit your intake of it to 1 to 2 serving every month only. Otherwise, experts say that it can put your baby at risk of having developmental problems. Aside from tuna, other types of fish that contain high amounts of mercury include king mackerel, swordfish and shark.

It doesn’t mean, however, that you should steer clear of fish. Actually, omega-3 fatty acids present abundantly in fish are good for your baby. Just make sure that the ones you opt for are very low in mercury.

Undercooked Shellfish

You can also obtain good amounts of omega-3 fatty acids from various types of shellfish. However, see to it that they are cooked very well in order to make sure that all the bacteria and parasites present in them are killed.

For instance, health authorities say that raw shellfish may contain a type of bacterium called listeria. When ingested by a pregnant woman, listeria can enter the baby’s system via the placenta. Such may lead to miscarriage, premature delivery, stillbirth and other serious issues concerning your baby.

Raw Meat

It’s not just your baby’s wellbeing that is placed on the line if you consume raw meat contaminated with bacteria and parasites, but your overall health as well. That is why you should see to it that every piece of meat you are about to add to your diet is cooked all the way through in order to keep your growing baby and yourself out of harm’s way.

While some processed meat may be consumed raw, they may in fact become contaminated with certain types of bacteria during storage or while being processed. Needless to say, you should also have them cooked very well.

Organ Meats

While it’s true that organ meats are excellent sources of certain types of nutrients, they are not suitable for women who are in the family way. That’s because they contain high amounts of vitamin A, which can be very toxic to a baby inside the womb. According to experts, too much vitamin A can cause liver toxicity and birth defects.

This does not mean, however, that a pregnant woman should completely turn her back on organ meats. Health authorities say that she should simply limit her consumption of those to once a week only.

Uncooked Eggs

Experts say that it’s possible for raw eggs to be contaminated with a bacterium that is responsible for a lot of cases of food poisoning, and it’s called salmonella.

Although it’s true that it is only the pregnant woman who can experience a salmonella infection, severe cases of it may actually cause uterine cramps that may lead to premature delivery or even stillbirth. Aside from raw eggs themselves, a pregnant woman should avoid anything else that may have raw eggs such as salad dressing and frostings.

Raw Sprouts

Everyone knows that sprouts are some of the healthiest foods on the face of the planet. However, it’s very much possible for them to be contaminated with salmonella. Unfortunately, washing sprouts thoroughly with water is not enough to get rid of any salmonella on them.

The good news is a pregnant woman may still be able to take advantage of the vitamins and minerals present in sprouts, and that is by cooking them very well before consumption.
