Food Guide for Sugar-Free Detox

Our love for sugar often becomes a love-hate relationship. Sometimes we hate it because of what it does to our physique, but often, we just couldn’t resist the power of the sugary stuff. You’re probably guilty of declaring that you’ll stop eating any sweet stuff but can’t hold on to this commitment because, let’s face it, our taste buds are looking forward to the sugar rush. Unfortunately, too much sweets can take a toll on our health so if you are planning on doing a sugar-free detox, this food guide can help.

  • Whole grains. The first thing that you should be including in your diet is more whole grains. Think brown rice, millet, quinoa, oats, wild rice, and the like. These are all good sources of carbohydrates that will keep your blood sugar leveled throughout the day.
  • Meats. Meats should also be present in your daily diet when you are trying to flush sugar from your system. You can choose from chicken, turkey, lamb, beef, or bison even. These food sources are useful because they are packed with protein that can help with your digestion. Protein is also necessary when it comes to building and repairing muscles.
  • Vegetables. You will never go wrong in eating vegetables especially when it comes to sugar-free detox. For one thing, vegetables are high in antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other important nutrients that can fill your belly up while boosting your overall health. Another plus to eating vegetables is that you can eat a lot without worrying about consuming too much calories.
  • Seafood. Another type of food that is pretty safe to eat while you are on a sugar detox is seafood. Catfish, mackerel, sardines, tilapia, you name it, you can eat it. Seafood is high in essential fatty acids as well as zinc that are important in your overall function.
  • Nuts and seeds. You should make it a point to have some nuts and seeds while you are getting rid of the sugar in your body. Almonds, pistachios, sunflower seeds, all of these are packed with iron, protein, zinc, and other important nutrients that will help make you stronger and healthier. The best thing about eating nuts and seeds is that you can have them as snacks or part of your salads for that extra crunch. They can stave off your hunger without causing your blood sugar levels from going up and down too much.
  • Fresh fruit. Your sugar-free detox will not be complete without fruits. However, there are certain fruits that you need to stay away from such as watermelon, mangoes, cherries, grapes, and prunes because they are high in glycemic index. What you can do, on the other hand, is add blueberries, grapefruit, strawberries, plum, and coconut as they are low in glycemic index so your blood sugar won’t spike suddenly.
  • Spices. There is no harm in using spices in your meals when you’re in a sugar-free detox. For one thing, they will make your dishes more palatable, and they will give you a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals too. Add some basil, rosemary, oregano, thyme, and what not to your spice rack and go crazy with them in your meals. You’ll probably fall in love with their taste too while you are at it.
