Early Signs of Liver Damage that You Should Know

There is a huge chance that you aren’t really thinking about liver failure that much believing that this disease only occurs when you are overweight or have a history of excessive drinking. But you might be surprised to learn that liver disease is quite common based on a recent research where one in eight individuals are diagnosed with the fatty liver disease which is common in those who are carrying extra weight. The problem with this disease is that the symptoms do not really appear until severe damage has been done making it difficult to treat this condition. When this happens, it can lead to liver failure, cirrhosis, even death. That said, it is important that we keep our eyes peeled for signs that your liver is acting up. Here are a few that you should take into consideration.

Joint pain

When it comes to symptoms of liver failure, joint pain is one that you should take note of although this is also part of other types of diseases. Liver disease can trigger autoimmune issues where healthy cells are attacked. This can cause joint pain to appear in females.

Yellowing eyes and skin

It’s quite scary to see that the whites of your eyes or even your skin is starting to turn yellow, but there is a simple explanation to this and that is you are suffering from jaundice. Jaundice is triggered by high levels of bilirubin that cause the yellow tinge. If there is discoloration in your eyes or skin, this is a sign that your liver is damaged and that you need to have yourself checked by a doctor.

Darker colored urine

Yellow urine is a good indication that you are suffering from dehydration, but when your pee is darker than that, it means that your liver is starting to fail. The color of your feces can also determine whether your liver has damage when it is more yellow than brown. The yellow hue is a sign that your liver cannot process the toxins that are present in your body.

Easy to bruise or bleed

Another possible sign that your liver is damaged is when you tend to bruise quickly or bleed when it is not normal for you to do so. A damaged liver can have a hard time making protein to clot the blood hence you tend to bruise or bleed faster than before.

Poor memory

What other signs should you watch out for? Well, if you tend to be more forgetful than before it can mean that your liver is having a hard time getting rid of the toxins that are in your blood which can lead to hepatic encephalopathy. The problem with this is that it leads to memory loss hence you have a hard time remembering where you have put your keys and such.

Itchy skin

Another sign that your liver is acting up is when you have itchy skin which you can’t find no relief from. This happens because the bile in your liver is being deposited into the skin hence the constant itching. If you aren’t finding any relief from the constant itching and you find that it’s not caused by any allergies, then the likely culprit is your liver.

Loss of appetite

This is probably one of the most important signs that you should keep an eye out as loss of appetite may be a symptom of liver failure. Although lack of appetite may be triggered by other health issues, if this is accompanied by other signs mentioned here, it is best that you consult with your doctor as soon as possible.
