Advantages of Using Herbs and Spices when Cooking

Most of us are used to using salt and artificial flavouring when cooking but sadly, they don’t really do much except increase our sodium intake. Health experts are growing concerned with the rise of obesity all over the world including heart problems because of the food that we prepare and eat. And because of this, they are encouraging everyone to take note of the ingredients that they use when preparing home meals because there are other healthier alternatives to using salt and those artificial flavouring being sold today and one of these is to use herbs and spices.

Basil, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, rosemary, and thyme are just a few examples of herbs and spices that can give you a whole new flavour when added to your meal.

What’s more, they come with several health benefits and these are:

Basil. This herb is known for its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties and is often used in many dishes like omelette, soups and vegetables. Basil can combat digestive problems and is currently being studied to determine if its anti-cancer properties can reduce one’s risk of acquiring this disorder.

Rosemary. Rosemary contains anti-inflammatory not to mention antioxidants that can combat inflammation. Other health benefits that can be gleaned from this herb is that it contains fiber for better digestive health, iron for our respiratory system, and calcium to make our bones stronger.

Ginger. This root is traditionally used as a medicine to combat indigestion as well as to relieve colds. It is also known to contain gingerols which can reduce the pain on your joints caused by arthritis while at the same time combat certain cancers. Other benefits that are linked to this spice include relief from menstrual pain, bronchitis, as well as muscle soreness. You can use this for stir-fry, salads, and soups to get that extra kick to your meals.

Turmeric. Another spice that delivers plenty of health benefits, turmeric can give your taste buds that added punch. This particular spice is a key ingredient in many Indian foods. These herbs and spices can be found in your local grocery whether in dry leaves or in powder form. If you want, you can plant some of these herbs in your garden so you will have access to fresh herbs any time you want.
