Fitness has certainly evolved over the years. Now it seems that water exercises are making a huge comeback as people are turning to swimming pools to get their daily dose of exercise. Aside from swimming, water aerobics seem to be on top of the list of must-try exercises recently and why not? When exercising in the water, there is less pressure on your joints which is perfect for those who are suffering from joint pain, injuries, and the like.

But just like with any fitness program, weighing the pros and cons of water aerobics can give you a decent picture of what you can get out of this exercise. Here are some of its advantages and disadvantages that you should know about.


  • Perfect for all ages. Water aerobics can actually be done by anyone regardless of their age. If you want to bond with your family while working out, this might be a good choice.
  • It keeps you cool. Another advantage to water aerobics is that you won’t overheat as you are partially immersed in water. Overweight participants might find this helpful especially when their body temperature rises when they exert effort.
  • Low impact. Like it was mentioned before, since the water in the pool offers buoyancy, there is less impact on your joints. This prevents injuries and allows you to improve your flexibility without damaging your joints.
  • You burn a lot of calories. Another plus to working out in the water is that you are actually burning quite a lot of calories in just a short period of time. This is due to the resistance you are getting from the water as you perform different aerobic exercises. You might think that water aerobics is easy but you’ll be out of breath soon enough.


  • Not enough calories burned. Compared to performing HIIT or circuit training, water aerobics cannot let you burn the same amount of calories.
  • Weight loss is not guaranteed. Although water aerobics is considered as an exercise, there is no guarantee that you will lose a significant amount of weight unlike when you do intense workouts.
  • You need access to a pool. Unless you have constant access to a pool, it might be difficult to sustain water aerobics.
  • Costs money. Another downside to doing water aerobics is that you will need to dole out money just to be able to access a swimming pool in your area. There are some who will require a membership fee for you to use their pool which can be a bit pricey especially when you are joining an exclusive club.
  • You need to find a decent instructor. In order for you to get the most out of your water aerobics session, you need to make sure that your instructor is licensed and properly trained. Unfortunately, there are not enough water aerobics instructor as of yet so you might have a hard time finding one.

There is no doubt that water aerobics can help you with your weight loss goals but you need to consider its pros and cons before pushing through so you won’t waste your time and your money.
