Acid Reflux Home Remedies

Acid reflux can happen from time to time when the stomach acid goes back up to our esophagus causing a burning sensation. This can also lead to heartburn which we all know can be downright uncomfortable. But when your acid reflux happens frequently, it is possible that you have gastroesophageal reflux disorder or GERD. Normally, your doctor will recommend omeprazole to alleviate the symptoms of GERD, but there are other remedies to tame the stomach acid building up in your stomach. Here are a few that you should try.

Start losing weight

If you are over the normal weight for your age and height, and have acid reflux, you might want to start going on a diet. One reason behind this is that the more belly fat that you have, the higher risk of hiatus hernia where your lower esophageal sphincter gets pushed up thus causing stomach acid to go back up.

Reduce your alcohol intake

Drinking alcohol when you have acid reflux is not really a good idea as it can make your condition worse. When you drink alcoholic beverages, they can increase the amount of stomach acid present in your stomach thus making your heartburn more painful. Even moderate consumption of alcohol can trigger acid reflux from time to time, so you might want to reconsider drinking this beverage.

Have some chia seeds

Chia seeds an effective solution for heartburn because they contain several nutrients such as protein, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, fiber, iron, and selenium. Just take a spoonful of these seeds mixed with water or you can incorporate it into your meal twice a day to help alleviate heartburn or acid reflux.

Try baking soda

The build of acid in your stomach can be uncomfortable especially when it goes back up your esophagus. One way to neutralize the acids there is to combine half a tablespoon of baking soda with a glass of water and drink it. This solution helps reduce the amount of gastric acid that is happening in your stomach so that you will feel relief.

Skip eating raw onion

If you are a fan of eating raw red onion from time to time, you will need to stop as this can cause frequent heartburn on your part. Not only that, but your chances of acid reflux will increase too especially when you add onion to your meal.
