Our love for anything sweet is one of the reasons why we are still struggling with losing weight. The sugary snacks that we often eat cause our blood sugar levels to go up which trigger insulin so that the sugar in the bloodstream can be delivered to the cells. However, too much consumption of sweets can cause our body to become resistant to insulin putting us at risk of heart problems and Type 2 diabetes. Also, your body will lock in the fat which makes the number in your weighing scale go up.

The question now is, how will you be able to beat back your addiction to anything sweet? If you need help with combating your sugar addiction, try the following tips out.

  • Eat salad first. It’s a good idea to start your meal with a salad as the vegetables that you’re using can help soak up excess sugar and starch from your body. Also the soluble fiber that are found in apples, beans, oranges, and carrots tend to work like a sponge, absorbing all the starch and sugar and then slowly releasing them into your bloodstream for a steady supply of energy.
  • Skip processed foods. Both processed foods as well as sugar can trigger addiction. Eating sugary snacks can actually make your body release dopamine which is a feel-good hormone. When this feeling disappears, you’ll most likely want another bite of your sugary snack to experience that rush of good feeling. Unfortunately, this will become a habit that will wreak havoc to your health. The best thing to do is to start eating whole foods or nutrient-rich foods that will not only make you feel full but prevent your cravings from being triggered.
  • Add protein to your meals. One reason why you should add protein-rich foods to your meals is because they can prevent your insulin levels from spiking. Although protein doesn’t contain any glucose in it, it can actually trigger insulin secretion quickly enough that will prevent your blood sugar from spiking. This means that you won’t experience any sugar crash later on so you will have a steady supply of energy throughout the day.
  • Increase your serotonin levels. If you want to stop your sugar addiction, you need to learn how to increase your serotonin levels normally. Serotonin is also referred to as the happiness hormone which you can actually elevate through exercise, diet, and getting enough sleep. If you’re feeling generally good, you are less likely to want anything sweet.
  • Sip some wine during dinner. Another trick to keeping your sugar addiction at bay is to drink wine while having dinner. Alcoholic beverages like wine have the ability to block sugar so if you consume wine while eating, you are preventing your liver from producing glucose. However, don’t overindulge yourself with wine as drinking too much can cause your calorie intake to increase while leaving you a bit tipsy after a few glasses.
