Gardening Tricks for Beginners

Gardening is a fun and enjoyable past time that you can do at home. Not only does this activity frees you up from stress, it is also adds to the beauty of your home. But gardening can be a bit daunting to those who are just starting because you need to think of what design to use for your space, what type of plants to sow, and whether you are going to raise vegetables, flowers, or even trees. So how can you achieve the garden of your dreams? Here are a few tricks that you should keep in mind.

Start small

Starting a garden shouldn’t have to be too difficult because you can always start small. A container garden is one of the best options for you to start with since it is portable plus you get to contain it in a small area of your lawn or backyard. Gardeners recommend that container gardens are put near the house since it will be easier to access and you can enjoy them when you look out the window too.

Location is everything

Another trick that you should learn when it comes to your garden is that location matters. Not all plants can thrive under the sun while others can withstand the heat. If you are planning on adding decorative plants to your home, make sure that you do your research first. This way, you will be able to assign them spaces in your garden and watch them thrive in it too.

Get sufficient amounts

If you fancy a certain plant, it is always a good idea to buy three or six of the same kind for uniformity. You can gauge how big the plant is already then you can buy additional ones to act as accents in your garden. It doesn’t matter whether it is a flowering plant or not, getting more can help with the design of your space.

Time it

It’s nice to start a garden, but if you want it to be really successful, you will need to learn how to time your plants. This is especially true if you are planning on growing vegetables because they only thrive in certain temperatures. Check the type of soil that you have in your area, so you will know which ones will work in your place and which ones won’t. This will save you time and effort too.

Plant to deter pests

You might think that plants are just for decorative purposes only but there are plants that can actually help deter pests. You can place them near your vegetables so no insects will get to them. This way, not only will you get beautiful flowering plants, but you’ll also be able to protect your vegetables from harm. You’re hitting two birds with one stone! Not a bad idea, right? For example, you can add nasturtium in your garden near your vegetables because they attract aphids instead of these pesky pests harming your vegetables. Another option would be to plant marigolds near your tomatoes because they prevent roundworms from feasting on your tomatoes too.

Go for hardy plants

For beginners, you can always start by going for plants that are hardy. Examples of these are onions, tomatoes, bush beans, and peppers. Vines like clematis, roses, and dahlias are also good options to start with because they can grow without too much care on your part.

Gardening is an enjoyable hobby especially when you see your plants in full bloom or when you are able to harvest vegetables from them. It doesn’t matter how small or big your space is, there are a lot of ways for you to start your very own garden and keep it too.
