Do You Have Joint Pain? Then Avoid These Foods

Contrary to popular belief, joint pain is a problem that is faced by old and young alike. So in other words, it doesn’t matter if you are in your teens or 60s — an achy and stiff joint is something that can bug you.

Luckily, there are medications available for joint pain. There are also certain exercises and alternative forms of healing that are known to be very good at managing such issue that is oftentimes debilitating. Doctors say that it is a good idea, too, for anyone who is pestered with joint pain to carefully mind what he or she eats.

Yes, anything that you put in your mouth can have a considerable impact on the current condition of your joint. Especially if you are diagnosed with arthritis or you once injured a joint, you should watch your diet.

Here are some of the foods that you should avoid for they can actually cause or worsen joint pain:

Cured or Processed Meats

Your favorite cured or processed meats contain certain chemicals that are known to trigger inflammation. Salami, pepperoni, sausages, lunch meats, hot dogs, beef jerky — all of these meat products must go if you really want to keep joint pain and swelling at bay.

Table Sugar

Most people think that table sugar is only bad for overweight individuals or diabetics. Actually, this sweet stuff is bad for just about anybody else, and that includes a person who is often bugged by joint pain. Scientists say that table sugar is something that can cause inflammation in the body to strike.

Table Salt

Just like table sugar, table salt is another no-no if you often suffer from joint pain. That’s because table salt can cause fluid to collect in your body, and this can make your joints end up achy and stiff. Limit your intake of anything that contains a lot of salt to also spare yourself from high blood pressure and heart disease.

Milk and Dairy Products

It’s true that milk and various dairy products are loaded with calcium that you need for stronger bones. Unfortunately, all of them contain a type of protein called casein. Based on studies, casein can irritate tissues found in your joints. It’s a good thing that you can get bone-strengthening calcium from other food sources.

Refined Grains

Donuts, muffins, cakes and many others out of white flour all contain refined grains which are well-known to cause inflammation, too. But the problem with refined grains does not start and end there as they are also devoid of fiber and other vital nutrients, unlike whole grains.

Eggs

Everyone knows that eggs are phenomenal sources of protein. They also supply the body with a bunch of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Unfortunately, there is something in eggs that can trigger inflammation — arachidonic acid. Luckily, it can only be found in the yolks so you can still enjoy egg whites.

Alcoholic Beverages

Steering clear of alcoholic drinks is also recommended if you don’t want to be bugged by joint pain all the time. Experts say that heavy drinkers are especially prone to developing various causes of joint pain, such as gout and arthritis. If saying “bye-bye” to alcohol is not an option, just make sure that you drink it moderately.

Other than dodging the above mentioned foods, it will also help a lot if you also:

Exercise on a regular basis

Something as simple as taking a walk for 20 minutes a day can make a world of difference, experts say.

Get rid of unwanted pounds

Especially if it’s one of your weight-bearing joints like the ankle or knee that is aching, shedding off unwanted weight is a wonderful idea.

Quit cigarette smoking

Toxins in cigarettes can impede proper blood circulation, thus hindering the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to your joints.
