Autism Causes, Symptoms and Remedies

Autism, also called Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is one of the common disorders in children and in some adults. It is a mental condition characterized by communication and social interaction difficulties, along with restricted and repetitive behavior. This neurological condition starts early in childhood and lasts throughout a person’s life, which may affect the integrity and coping of the person’s family. The following are the causes, signs and symptoms, and remedies for autism.

Causes

Autism has various causes. According to Autism Society, it is generally caused by brain structure and function abnormalities; although, the exact cause of the condition is unknown. As per the publication, this abnormalities can be detected by brain scans, which show differences in the brain size and structure of children with the condition versus the scans of neurotypical children. Since the exact cause is unknown, researchers are also focusing their study scopes on the correlations among genetics, heredity, and medical problems  In terms of genetics, it is theorized that autism is genetic, since children with the disorder may have inherited irregular genetic code segments for the disorder.

Signs and Symptoms

NHS UK has identified a set of signs and symptoms of autism that are common in children. In school-age children, the symptoms include speech that sounds monotonous or flat, seeming to talk at people than sharing a two-way conversation, reacting unusually negatively when asked to do something with other people, not being aware of other people’s personal space, little interest in interacting with other people, not enjoying activities that most children of their age enjoy, avoiding eye contact, repetitive movements like hand flapping and flicking their fingers, and preference to play with objects rather than people, among others.

Home Remedies

While medications may be prescribed by doctors to a person with autism, remedies can also be done as supplemental management for the disorder.

Food Choices

A proper diet is one remedy for autism. According to Dr. Axe’s official website, the top foods for autism include additive free and unprocessed foods, bone broth for animo acids and mineral deficiency improvement, chicken for amino acid tryptophan that promotes production of the calming neurotransmitter serotonin, probiotics for leaky gut repair, and fish for omega-3, which is good for the heart and brain. As per the publication, a person with autism should avoid gluten, since it worsens symptoms; cow’s dairy, which triggers gluten reactions; sugar, which leads to behavioral problems due to blood sugar fluctuations; food coloring and dyes; and soy, since it has phytic acid, which can irritate the intestines and cause leaky gut.

Home Greening

Another remedy for autism is greening one’s home; it does not necessary mean to paint the house green. According to Psychology Today, this refers to replacing commercial cleaning products like air fresheners and pesticides with the natural alternative. As per the publication, these can be bought at health food stores. Some natural alternates include baking soda and lemon juice. These contributes to detoxification of the child’s home, since toxic load is considered one of the multifaceted causes of autism.

Turmeric

In terms of herbs and spices, turmeric may help manage autism. According to Organic Facts, it is one of the most “potent” and “versatile” herbs in common use. It has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects to the body, which considerably promotes gut health and nutrient intake. As per the publication, these properties help reducing and eliminating the symptoms of autism.

Autism is a challenging condition of a person, especially to the parents of the person who has it. Thus, it is best to coordinate very well with the family’s health care provider for proper assessment and history taking, goal planning, interventions, health education, and outcome evaluation.
